1 Prep the eye and powder lightly; this
will help with the blending. Apply a
smoky chocolate-brown shadow under
the eye. Keep the shape slightly
rounded (as shown).
2 Using a large brush, apply a soft
wash of the same colour to the whole
lid, all the way up to the brow bone,
and extend out to the edge of the eye.
3 Apply a heavy black kohl pencil to the
inside rim of the eye and also messily
above the whole top lash line, pulling
the line out slightly. Heat up the pencil
by rubbing it on the back of your hand,
and blend the line above the top lashes.
4 Mix black with khaki eye shadow and
smudge it around the whole eye, close
to the lash line. Use a small rounded
brush to blend
5 Wet the brush, and smudge the
black/khaki shadow up towards the
brow bone. Don’t worry if the line isn’t
perfect, as you will be blending another
colour with it all the way up to the brow
bone.
6 Apply an aubergine eye shadow all
the way under the brow, blending it
to soften the black edges.
7 Clean up under the eye. Apply your
foundation base. Use corn-silk powder
to blend the black under the eye. Curl
lashes, then apply a full set of false
lashes. It is very important to define the
brows with this look. Finish with a metallic
green shadow in the inner corner of the
eye.
TIPS
When you’re applying the black pencil to the eye, pull it out and don’t let it stop suddenly. Don’t let it look too square.
Lining the inner eye with a creamy white pencil will open up the eyes.
Lining the eyes with black gives you a cat-like effect.
You can’t go past deep violet tones for smoky eyes, especially when you’re wearing black.
There is no eye shape that is not suited to smoky eyes.
If you want to add a little more colour, just hit the inner corner of your eyelids with a bright lavender, gold or blue.
Metallic colours are best.
Smoky eyes are fantastic for women with small lips; focusing on the eyes takes the attention off the lips.
If done properly, smoky eyes don’t have to be touched up after the initial application.
Remember, they don’t have to be black and dark. You can achieve smoky eyes with bronzed colours, a jewelled effect, and even shades of green.
